Coaching Wisdom from Responsible Sports
Randy Hanson
Printer-Friendly Format

This is the time of year where many coaches are in the midst of tryouts and others are in their "off-seasons".  For me, these times are perfect for reflecting on coaching philosophy and preparing to present its ideas - whether that be before or during the season.

I recently discovered an organization called Responsible Sports and their website at www.responsiblesports.com.  Over 100 one-minute videos later, I was sold!  After going through each, I have chosen a select few I thought might be helpful in both reflecting upon and articulating one's key coaching philosophies to players and parents.

Although these may seem, at times, to include common coaching information, I chose each because there is a key insight that may be a bit off the beaten track.  I try to hint at these in the video description.  Most of these keys come toward the end of the video.

Just in case you thought these philosophies are independent of winning, one of the coaches featured is Mike Candrea - 8 time national champion softball coach at the University of Arizona.

Player Development - includes a very interesting main focus

Measuring Effort - loved the insight on how to "slow the game down"

Confidence - interesting how the focus is on what the coach does

The Right Things - you cannot guarantee winning

Handling a Mistake - what players need to show teammates

Emotional Bank Accounts - a framework for motivation

Respect the Game - a specific way to show respect

Let Them Play - the true reasons to let them play

Parents Giving Feedback - the "huge part" that parents need to protect

Playing Referee - just enjoyed this one  Wink
